Sorry - I see I missed all this back in January and Tyriel asked me to comment on Blum's runes (which I may have done elsewhere). It is true that I began with his book (but I collected stones from the beach for my runes). A runester friend started via Blum's book and the runes with it and introduced me that way . Together we began to expand our reading and understanding of the Futhark. We quickly realised that Blum was - well, out there on his own. But he admits it all came to him on a road trip - and I bet it was quite the trip. I believe that the runes work with us when we seek sincerely. If all someone has at the start is Blum's book then they wil work through that.
I also believe there is value in considering everyone's thoughts on the runes and measuring these ideas against oeach other and our own intuition. That is what we are all doing on Rune secrets.
I rearely consult Blum now - but I still have it! Maybe I should look again now I have a little more knowledge about order and relationships and see if the order he came up with offers any potential insights into linkages within the accepted order .... :-)

Vanr: That is precisely what the blank rune is for, in my opinion: a replacement, a spare tire so to speak.

The Perthro Rune Meaning Analysis does suggest that a blank/wyrd rune is redundant. As I see it, Perthro already covers any of the meanings one might impose upon an actual 25th, blank rune. Using one in combination with Perthro would weaken the system, and in particular, weaken Perthro's importance (which is significant).

My first (commercial) set declared including 25 runes. When I openned it I found that Dagaz was missing. Without wondering, I drawed Dagaz on the blank one, feeling that I would not miss it in the future.

This site (particularly Perthro article) gave me the answer afterwards.

Yeh I don't like the blank rune. I actually made a bindrune on it and put it in my dream box. I don't like the order he has and I definitely see your reasoning in that. I pretty much bought the book but have moved on quickly to other books that I feel have more depth.

I have found no use in Blum's work, personally. I think that a blank rune weakens the overall system and I adamantly believe that the rune order of the futhark is of prime importance, because later on you will see that you can learn a lot of the individual runes from their position in the futhark. Blum's re-arrangement of the order seems arbitrary.

However, I know plenty of people, including Mahryan, who have begun their journey into the runes with Blum's handbook, so I will concede that he is a legitimate entry point. Maybe Mahryan can talk a little more about that. My knowledge of him pretty much ends there.

Just wanted feedback on what thoughts about Ralph Blum's book for the runes. I do not agree with his blank rune, but I do find some of his discriptions of the meanings pretty good. I don't like his arrangment of the runes either as he changed them from the org aetts. He does have some valid thoughts though on the rune meanings.

I think each of the practices has its purposes and can't always be associated, although there may be similarities.

I believe that runes, zodiac and tarot could be considered as an alphabet of our world and ourself. Therefore one could associate them.

I have heard of an association between Runes and Trees. Sensible. One could make the same with colours and crystals. Anyway.

But numbers... and this way...

I don't know whether one has a different opinion, but I cannot see any sense.
