Fehu – Rune Meaning

“Every beginning has within it the seeds of its own end.”

Fehu – “Fay-Who” – Literally: “Cattle” – Esoteric: Mobile Property, New Beginnings, Wealth

Key Concepts: Wealth, money, food, sustenance, Hamingja, luck, personal power, circulation of power,  financial strength, prosperity

Psi: Beginner’s Mind, presence, freedom, first impressions, young love

Mundane: money, recent purchases, reputation, freshness, fashionability

Divinations: New beginnings, social success, foresight, energy, travel, money, control; or greed, failure, atrophy, poverty, endings.

Governs:

  • Delegating your energy to another, power transference or projection; the sending rune
  • Drawing gravity into the personal sphere
  • Promotion of personal and social evolution, changing circumstances of importance
  • Increase in personal monetary wealth
  • Beginner’s mind and presence as a tool for consciously creating a fresh start

My notes:
Fehu is actually the rune of ‘luck’. The universe is not so much made up by chance, as by luck. Luck is a hidden but real energy field inherent in your ‘hamingja’. Fehu governs the capacity to hold this luck and use it like a magical ability. This basic energy, your accumulated luck, is the foundation of the wealth and power in your life. Courageous deeds are central to increasing one’s ‘luck’.

Circulation of power, wealth and the mobility of all things is a key aspect to Fehu. These are associated with new beginnings, but keep in mind that there are no true new beginnings or endings, only the conscious marks of transformation. This can be most effectively understood while studying the runes as a cycle in and of itself (visually, a circle). The use of this principle leads to beginner’s mind and to presence as a tool for consciously creating a fresh start.

Indeed, money will work for you best under the guidance of the energies implicit in Fehu. Yet money is only a mundane and simplistic representation of Fehu’s nature. It’s best to think of wealth as food, water, shelter, clothing, sustenance and mobile assets, rather than needless luxury.

In starting new endeavors, Fehu will activate the will, restore self-confidence and assist in goal-setting followed by immediate action. Use the symbol and its teachings against procrastination. It is a reminder to think for yourself, which is fundamental to working with the runes. I find that the vibration of this rune to be in alignment with the principles of sexual attraction, first impressions and young love. Fehu is a reminder for us to act out of the present moment.

The conscious use of money for right ends is the domain of Fehu. In society today it is important that we explore new definitions of wealth and come to a realization of what is truly valuable. Wealth is a creative process in every sense of the word, not a static and measurable mass. I encourage the exploration of this idea right away.

  1. In my case it is Tarot that mainly reflects my questions giving the more or less generalized summary of my own vision of the situation (warning: objects in this mirror are closer than they appear:-)) In fact there is a whole complex system of actually practicing Tarot rather than reducing it to a merely mantic tool which the above practitioners disregard as profane. I am by no means trying to claim the Runes to be a mere mantic tool, but they can sometimes be shockingly efficient that way: many years ago I’ve been told a whole story about my girlfriend of the time cheating on me, having to do a surgery + the information on getting money I needed – and all of that in just two spreads!

  2. If each rune was associated with a god/ess we could do that once this idea got established in the subconscious.
Not always fun to wade through past posts but I brought up the annoying trend that divination – for me anyway – seems to reflect the question. Results simply “echo” the question; no new information without contrivance and or projection. Your result seems to reflect this….
Something pointed out by an Austrian was that runes (referring to the Armanen runes) give Seemingly general answers. Yet they (supposedly) are giving answers that are come from the deepest levels. This same gentleman said to use the tarot for more mundane queries.
I tend to agree with this man….
You may want to check your natal chart and current transits. You might get an idea as to what thurizas was about as it can be interpreted in different ways.
Seems kinda straightforward however. You will have some challenges and will need to focus and align your ass(ets) towards your goal which will eventually manifest.
Othala might mean either someone from your line may be of help or, you’re overall material situation will turn out positive. Note that is just one aspect of life however.
I’d try another reading one a day where everything is going good.

  3. “For quite awhile in my dream I was struggling to draw Fehu, but every time it came out as Wunjo! When my attempts to draw it got really desperate the most I could achieve was adding the top sloping line of Fehu to that of Wunjo already drawn thus adding a resemblance of Sol to it. The same evening preceding the dream I received Fehu in counteracting position while divining.”

Could be wrong but this, on the surface, sounds like an issue about flow or giving back what is received. Mentioning sowilo could mean your soul might be involved here as well. Not quite tradition on this last bit but ya never know what lurks etc and so forth…

    1. Thank you for your idea. I should probably have mentioned the issue that dominates my thoughts and naturally became the subject of divination: it is a business project the launching of which I have been involved with for the last year or so and which is presently approaching the point where it either rockets up or dies altogether. As I mentioned Fehu was counteracting but at the same time Othal was pro-acting with Thurisaz as the principal acting force. Did anyone ever consider some Runes literally as the Gods they represent?

  4. Very USEFUL site – great thanks to Everyone for setting up, supporting and contributing. The only suggestion – can be a bit of a challenge to read in grey after having worked hours on end staring into he screen:-) The fact Fehu section has not become one of the few sections out of the 24 that are absolutely crowded with comments despite the globally overwhelming obsession with finance of today – this fact alone is enough to understand the exceptional quality of this particular place on the web. I wanted to share last night’s dream experience hoping to get some ideas from you: I never actually dreamt of writing runes before, so last night was the first time. For quite awhile in my dream I was struggling to draw Fehu, but every time it came out as Wunjo! When my attempts to draw it got really desperate the most I could achieve was adding the top sloping line of Fehu to that of Wunjo already drawn thus adding a resemblance of Sol to it. The same evening preceding the dream I received Fehu in counteracting position while divining.

    1. Thank you! It’s nice to hear from you and I’m glad you are finding the place to your liking! :) On Oct. 1st I am making an announcement regarding the Rune Secrets Study Community and the Book of Rune Secrets. Be sure to subscribe to the newsletter.

Hope to hear more from you soon.

  5. If fehu is a ” fee”, it is wise to ask what am I paying? And to whom? We know the whom, but He is a notorious deal-breaker! Runes are riddles, weaving in and out of a system long abandoned and changed. Money is more akin to uruz, fehu is what you did to get the ” cattle”. Sometimes you have to spend a little, to make a little. Indeed, fehu is a numinous power. Some people have an ability to make money. What is that power? Thought this might resonate.
